As a business owner, I get asked this question A LOT! Not only do I currently do YouTube, but I also run a small home daycare! I have also had two successful blogs and a podcast in the past. You can do anything you put your mind to if you are willing to put in the work!
Being a single mom isn’t all you are. You are a woman first and you should do what you love to do.
Starting and growing a successful business when you are a single parent can be difficult but it isn’t impossible.
Before even beginning the business aspect, first you need to take an evaluation of your life.
There is a time and a season for everything. Make sure that the season of life you are in is going to align with your goals to start a business.
Goal setting is probably the most important step when it comes to starting a business. You can’t succeed at anything if you don’t know what you are working towards.
Create clear and obtainable goals that are time sensitive! Don’t procrastinate. Get things done in a timely manner and be sure that you keep your goals posted where they are visible.
Gather Your Tribe
Let your friends and loved ones know that you are about to go into launch mode and you are going to need their help. As much as we want to do everything on our own, this is something you can’t do without help. There will be some late and long days ahead and you can’t be there for everything.
My daughter recently had an event at school that I had to miss but I sent tribe members in my place. Have them to not only be there for your kids but for you when you want to give up!
Talk to Your Kids
If you have children who are older, let them know what your plans are so they can be a part of your journey.
My daughter loves to write down my appointments, video ideas, and to help me film. She’s like my little assistant. My son likes to help me come up with content, too. Without them, I wouldn’t be as far as I am.
Take the time to tell them what you want to accomplish and why. I am sure they are a big part of that.
I am big on saving money and budgeting. If you work full time and want to work on creating a new primary source of income, save some money. Do your best to set aside at least 3 to 6 months worth of expenses if you can. You may need to cut back on some things until then.
If you don’t want to quit your full time job and just want to add a side hustle, you should still build your savings. Building a business isn’t cheap. You will need business cards, a website, other advertising expenses and things you don’t think about that will come into play. Having some extra money to take care of those things and not take away from your daily expenses makes a big difference.
Create A Space to Work
Even if you can’t have a private office, create some sort of space that is just for you.
As a single mom, that is rare, I know! But it is a must! This will be your creative space to work and get things done. My desk used to have baby wipes, slime buckets, and balls on it. Needless to say, I didn’t get much work done.
Make sure to keep the kids away from your work area. You can even put all your stuff in a bin that you take out when they are in bed. Do what you have to do to get your creative juice flowing properly!
Make it Happen
Once you have all of those things ready to go, it’s time to get to work and begin the journey of creating your business. Do your research (extensively!), get insight from other entrepreneurs and those in your niche.
More and more women are starting businesses every day. Go for it and create the life you’ve always wanted for you and your children.
